Half Shell Raw Bar – My New Favorite Happy Hour

In Key West, Happy Hour is a nightly event and everyone can get into a rut.  Same place, same food, same drinks, you get the idea.  So, to step out of our routine, we checked out the Half Shell Raw Bar’s Happy Hour.

We have been inside the Half Shell Raw Bar many times, but never for Happy Hour.  The location, well you just can’t beat it.  Close to everything, yet slightly off the beaten path.  But, right on the water.  Which means the view is just beautiful.  You can watch the fishermen bring in the day’s catch and unload it into the Fish Market.

The building was originally a shrimp warehouse.  In 1972 it became a restaurant which has, even from the beginning, been a local favorite.  The seafood is fresh and the atmosphere is, well, Key West.  It’s laid back, friendly and casual.  Just like Key West.  Sit at one of the wooden picnic tables or pull up a stool at the bar. We sat at a picnic table and had a wonderful view of the water and the unique decor.  License plates fill the walls.

Happy Hour Food and drink

The Half Shell Raw Bar has a special menu for Happy Hour.  Each night from 4:30 to 6:30 you can order fresh shrimp, clams and various other types of seafood at a discounted price.  Drinks are 2 for 1.  Be sure to confirm what drinks are part of the Happy Hour special.  We ordered clams, shrimp and a couple of beers.  It was the perfect dinner before we headed over to watch the sunset celebration.

Key Lime Pie….

Of course, we had to have a slice of Key Lime pie.  The Half Shell’s Key Lime pie is served with a healthy dollop  of fresh whipped cream and a sprinkling of spices.  A very tasty and, well, yummy slice of pie.  I enjoy trying the different versions of Key Lime pie and comparing what makes each one different and yummy.

Overall, the Half Shell Raw Bar is our new favorite Happy Hour location.  It’s quiet, casual and very Key West.  The food is fresh and the beer is cold.  What else would anyone need?
