Citrus Margarita

In my younger days, margaritas were not my go to drink.  Most margaritas have a “bite” that takes an acquired taste.  But, once I began to experiment with flavors, I found fresh mixes made the best drinks.  This Citrus Margarita is the perfect example.  Instead of relying on a store bought mix, I used fresh ingredients and created a very refreshing cocktail.

Citrus Margarita

Combine tequila, triple sec, sweet and sour mix and fresh orange juice into a cocktail shaker filled with ice.  Shake and then serve over ice.

Working off of the fresh theme, I make my own sweet and sour mix.  I really isn’t very hard and with a few ingredients you will have the very best mixer for your drinks.  Equal parts lemon juice, lime juice, water and sugar.  The recipe can be found here.

As an interesting side note, as of 2008, the margarita was the most commonly ordered drink in the United States.  It accounted for 18% of all mixed drink sales.   Sounds like we all drink a lot of these.  I like mine on the rocks more than frozen and with no salt…. yep, I know, totally out of the norm for most margarita aficionados.

This drink is very similar to one served at Margaritaville restaurants… the Orange Crush.  That drink combines fresh orange juice, orange vodka, triple sec and sour mix (which really means sweet and sour).  As with any drink recipe, I say start with the basic recipe and then tweak to your tastes.  If you like the drink a little stronger, by all means add more tequila.  I you like the drink to have more “bite” then I would add a little more sweet and sour mix.  Triple sec has an orange taste, but if you leave it out of this drink, you will miss that certain something it adds.  Over course, if you love orange and want a little more of that flavor, add a shot of Grand Marnier.  Most of all, mix a drink, toast to good times and enjoy!
